“Itself” is a word we use when we talk about one thing, animal, or idea that does something to or for the same thing, animal, or idea. We use “it” for the thing, and “itself” when that same thing is also the one being acted on. For example, if a robot turns on its own power, we say, “The robot turned itself on.” “Itself” helps us show that nothing else is involved—only that one thing acting on the same thing.
