🇬🇧 System meaning: English Vocabulary Flash Card

noun
A system is an organized way that people agree to use for counting, measuring, or weighing things so everyone understands the same amount. For example, we have a system for telling time (60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour), a system for measuring how tall you are (centimeters or inches), and a system for weighing things (grams or pounds). Using a system keeps everything fair, clear, and not totally confusing, so when you say “one meter” or “one pound,” other people know exactly what you mean.

💬 Example Sentences

In my candy-saving system, three pieces go in the jar and two mysteriously go in my mouth for “quality control.”
My little brother’s time system says five minutes of chores equals forty-five minutes of complaining.
We tried a chore point system, but my sister kept giving herself bonus points for “emotional support.”
I made a snack system that says two carrots cancel out one cookie, so technically I’m the healthiest cookie monster ever.
Scientists use a system called the metric system, where things are neatly counted in tens, but my stomach uses a snack system where everything is counted as “not enough.”

📖 Mini Story

At the market, a boy found an old scale and a stone system. The seller showed a system of stones: a small stone was one, a green stone was five. The boy tried the system, stacking stones to weigh an apple. He used the system again for the pear. He smiled — the system worked, and he bought the fruit.
