🇬🇧 Stalactite meaning: English Vocabulary Flash Card

noun
A stalactite is a pointy piece of rock that hangs down from the ceiling of a cave, kind of like a stone icicle. It is made when water with tiny bits of rock (called minerals) drips from the cave roof for a very, very long time. Each drop leaves behind a tiny bit of mineral, and over thousands of years those tiny bits pile up into a long, hanging rock decoration called a stalactite.

💬 Example Sentences

The stalactite and my dad had a contest to see who could stand still the longest; the stalactite won by a few thousand years.
I waved at the stalactite and politely asked it not to fall on my head during our tour.
My brother tried to lick a stalactite until the guide shouted, "That snack took thousands of years to make!"
The bat flew past a stalactite and bonked its head, proving even cave experts make mistakes.
The stalactite was basically a rock icicle cosplaying as a sword.

📖 Mini Story

She crawled beneath a sharp stalactite cluster and reached up. A cold stalactite tip brushed her hand; a drop fell. She stared at the stalactite. The guide pointed at another thin stalactite and warned, gently, not to touch. She took a careful photo. Months later the picture of that bright stalactite made her smile, glad she left it whole.
