🇬🇧 Oryx meaning: English Vocabulary Flash Card

noun
An oryx is a big antelope that lives in hot, dry deserts in Africa and Arabia. It has very long, straight or slightly curved horns that can be as long as a person’s arm or more. Its fur is usually light to help it stay cool in the sun, and it has dark markings on its face and legs that make it look like it’s wearing a mask and socks. Oryx are very good at surviving with little water and can live in places where many other animals would get too hot or too thirsty.

💬 Example Sentences

Our teacher said the oryx can survive with very little water, unlike us, who panic when the water bottle is only half full.

An oryx with its long horns walked past us like it owned the entire desert—and honestly, it kind of did.
At the animal costume party, the oryx didn’t dress up; everyone else just tried to look as cool as it already did.
An oryx can go for weeks without drinking water, which makes it the undefeated champion of the desert “Who Forgot Their Water Bottle” contest.

📖 Mini Story

At dawn a father and child spot an oryx on the dune. The oryx stops, lifts its head, long straight horns gleam. A second oryx joins, then three oryx race across pale sand, dark face markings sharp in the sun. The child laughs as the oryx vanish over the ridge, and the father nods, smiling.
