🇬🇧 Mutant meaning: English Vocabulary Flash Card

noun
A mutant is a living thing—like an animal, plant, or tiny germ—that is different from others of its kind because something in its genes changed permanently. Genes are like tiny instruction books inside every cell that tell a body how to grow, what color to be, and how things work. Sometimes, by accident, a gene changes. Most of the time this doesn’t make a big difference, but sometimes it makes the organism look or act a bit unusual. When that change is permanent and is part of the organism, we call that living thing a mutant.

💬 Example Sentences

The mutant banana in the fruit bowl was so curved it looked like it was trying to tie itself in a knot.
The mutant apple in the tree had a mini apple growing out of it, like it was carrying its own backpack snack.
The snowman we built had six arms and three noses, so we declared it a proud mutant snowman.
Our class goldfish turned orange and blue, so we wrote on the tank, “Beware: mutant fish.”
Some real mutants in nature are actually helpful—like certain mutant bacteria that can eat oil spills—proving that not every mutant is a movie monster.

📖 Mini Story

A child found a small cat that was a mutant with three eyes beside the river. A man shouted mutant! The mutant blinked one eye and fished a stuck puppy from the reeds. The crowd smiled at the brave mutant. The child fed the mutant, and the town warmed to the strange friend.
