🇬🇧 Bleeding meaning: English Vocabulary Flash Card

noun
In the past, people believed that many illnesses were caused by having “bad” or “too much” blood in the body. So doctors sometimes used a treatment called bleeding. During bleeding, they would remove some of a person’s blood on purpose, often by cutting the skin a little or using special tools. They thought that letting out some blood would help the sick person get well. Today, doctors almost never use bleeding as a treatment, because modern science has shown it usually doesn’t help and can be dangerous.

💬 Example Sentences

When the medieval doctor suggested bleeding as a cure for sneezing, the patient just grabbed a tissue instead.
Grandma read that people used bleeding for almost every sickness, then said, “I’ll just stick with soup, thanks.”
The castle doctor suggested bleeding for everything, until one day the patient said, “I just wanted directions to the bathroom.”
When the apprentice asked, “What if bleeding doesn’t work?” the old doctor replied, “Then we try more bleeding,” which was not reassuring.
Bleeding was once so common that some doctors thought it could cure almost anything—today we know it usually did the opposite and made people sicker, so modern doctors only take blood carefully for tests, not as a cure.

📖 Mini Story

The fever burned. Grandfather lay white while the doctor arranged cups for the bleeding. The bleeding began; the bleeding was quick as blood pooled and the child watched. After the bleeding the old man's breath eased, hands cooling. Later they wrapped the arm and spoke quietly about the bleeding, grateful and frightened.
