📖 The Wild Week of Weather

James loved keeping a diary of the weather. He lived in a small village where the sky always had surprises, and this particular week became one of the strangest he had ever written about.

On Monday morning, the air was chilly, and thin mist floated over the fields. The grass still carried traces of frost, shining faintly in the pale light. James pulled his coat tighter and smiled. “A cold start, but peaceful,” he wrote in his book.

Tuesday, however, was rainy. It didn’t pour heavily, but the steady drizzle made the streets wet and shiny. “It feels endless,” James complained, though he secretly liked the rhythm of raindrops on his window. Later that evening, a prediction came on the radio about worse weather to follow.

On Wednesday, the weather grew violent. Dark clouds gathered, and soon a sudden hailstorm struck. Stones of hail bounced on the roof, making such a racket that James could hardly think. When the storm passed, the ground looked as if it had been touched by a short snowy spell.

Thursday turned even more dramatic. A fierce hurricane was reported further south, and though James’s village was safe from its centre, the strong winds and stormy skies carried its power. The air pressure dropped so quickly that doors rattled in their frames. James felt uneasy, noting how the whole world seemed to hold its breath.

On Friday afternoon, a local farmer warned James about the danger of a tornado. The clouds twisted above the fields, and for a short while, it looked as though a funnel might drop. Luckily, it did not touch the ground, but the memory of those dark, swirling shapes stayed with him.

By Saturday, the weather shifted yet again. Instead of storms, the sun came out in full force. A heatwave arrived, making the air feel boiling. James lay in the shade, fanning himself with a notebook. “Unbelievable,” he muttered. “From frost to boiling in less than a week.”

Still, the radio’s prediction was not optimistic. Long periods of drought might follow, since the sudden rise in temperature could dry the soil quickly. James worried for the farmers, who had already struggled with too much water earlier in the year.

On Sunday, the week ended with one final trick. The morning was snowy, though it quickly melted into drizzle by midday. Then, by the afternoon, the air turned chilly again, and a quiet mist returned over the fields—just as it had begun.

James sat at his desk, reviewing his diary: rainy skies, snowy fields, sudden hail, thick mist, endless drizzle, fierce hurricanes, a near tornado, threats of drought, a violent hailstorm, stormy winds, boiling heat, drops in pressure, a burning heatwave, and finally the return of chilly air.

He closed the book and laughed softly. “If anyone ever asks about the weather in our village, I’ll just tell them: we had everything in one week.”
