📖 The Big Day at the Shore

Amelia and her brother Ben were so excited—it was the first day of their summer vacation, and they were heading to the shore. They wore bright swimsuits, carried a striped umbrella, and packed everything into a big bag: sunglasses, sunscreen, a bucket, and even a little shovel.

When they arrived, the sun was shining and the sea sparkled. Amelia put on her sunglasses and spread out the towels while Ben ran towards the water. “Wait!” their mum called. “Put on sunscreen first. You don’t want to turn red like a lobster or a crab.”

After a quick layer of cream, the children rushed into the waves. Ben loved to splash as hard as he could, while Amelia preferred to float on her back, letting the waves rock her gently. Above them, a noisy seagull swooped down, hoping to steal someone’s sandwich.

Later, they came back to the sand to build a sandcastle. Ben filled the bucket with wet sand and Amelia used the shovel to shape towers. A curious crab scuttled sideways nearby, watching as their castle grew taller. “It looks like the king’s palace!” Amelia laughed.

After some time, they lay under the umbrella to rest. Mum and Dad decided to sunbathe, while the children watched the lifeguard sitting high in his chair, keeping an eye on the swimmers. “It must be an important job,” Amelia whispered. Ben nodded, still staring at the waves.

Soon, a group of teenagers arrived with surfboards. “Look, they’re going surfing!” Ben shouted. The lifeguard blew his whistle to warn them about the strong current, but when the waves settled, they started again, riding smoothly across the water. Amelia thought it looked exciting, though a little scary.

In the afternoon, the family went back for another swim. This time, Amelia wanted to try diving under the waves, while Ben just made a huge splash again and again. “Stop splashing me!” she laughed, though she secretly enjoyed it.

When they were tired, they returned to their towels. Mum handed out sandwiches, but a bold seagull landed right next to them. Ben waved the shovel to chase it away, and it flew off, squawking loudly.

At the end of the day, their castle was washed away by the tide, but Amelia didn’t mind. “That’s what happens at the shore,” she said. “We can always build another one tomorrow.”

As the sun set, they packed their things—the bucket, the shovel, the nearly empty bottle of sunscreen, and the colourful umbrella. With sandy feet and happy smiles, they walked home, already planning the next day of their vacation.

Ben grinned. “Tomorrow, I’m going surfing.”
Amelia laughed. “And tomorrow, I’m going to float all day like a starfish.”

It had been a perfect seaside adventure.
