📖 The Camp of Many Feelings

Ella had never been to summer camp before. On the first morning, she felt excited as the bus arrived at the forest. She looked out of the window with hope that the week would be full of adventure.

But as soon as she stepped off, she also felt a little worried. Everyone else already seemed to know each other. She stood alone, feeling a bit lonely. A girl gave her a friendly smile, but another boy was quite unfriendly, pushing past her with his bag.

During the first activity, archery, Ella grew confused because she didn’t know how to hold the bow. She felt upset when her arrow fell to the ground, but the kind instructor helped her. “Don’t let fear stop you,” he said warmly. She took a deep breath, became more calm, and tried again. This time, the arrow hit the board, and she felt a rush of surprise and pride.

In the afternoon, the children went to the lake. Some were splashing happily, but Ella sat on the grass, feeling bored. She didn’t want to swim, and she felt jealous when she saw others laughing in the water. But then the same friendly girl from earlier came over. “Come with me,” she said kindly. Together they waded in slowly, and soon Ella felt more relaxed as the cool water touched her feet.

That night, the campfire made everyone feel safe. Still, when the counsellor began to tell a scary ghost story, Ella felt scared. The shadows of the trees seemed alive, and her heart raced with fear. But when she looked around, she saw that other campers looked worried too. Then someone shouted, “Boo!” from behind a tree, and the whole group jumped in surprise. Even though she was upset for a moment, Ella laughed afterwards, realising it was just another camper in disguise.

By the end of the week, Ella had felt every emotion—excited, bored, calm, worried, lonely, confused, relaxed, friendly, unfriendly, upset, scared, jealous, and even deeply kind. She had faced her fears, enjoyed wonderful surprises, and held onto her hope that camp would be something special.

On the last day, as they packed their bags, Ella smiled. She had made friends, conquered challenges, and learned that feelings could change quickly. Sometimes you might feel lonely or jealous, but with a little kindness and hope, you can find joy again.

She waved goodbye to her new friends, her heart full of mixed feelings but mostly excited for the next adventure waiting for her.
