It was a beautiful Saturday morning when Emma decided to organise a new picnic for her friends. The park looked so clean, the grass freshly cut, and the flowers bright in the sun. She packed sandwiches, fruit, and lemonade into a basket until it was full, and set off with a smile.
Her first guest was Tom, a friendly boy who was always smiling. “What a nice day for a picnic!” he said. Emma agreed, glad to have such kind company. Soon, Sophie arrived. She was a little tired after a long week, but the thought of food made her cheerful.
Not long after, Ben came running. He was hungry, louder than usual, and shouted, “Where’s the food?” His voice was so loud that some birds flew away, but everyone laughed. Emma handed him a sandwich, and soon he was full and much more quiet.
The group spread out a blanket. Emma looked around at her lovely friends and thought how beautiful the day felt. Even though Sophie was still a little tired, she appreciated how kind Emma had been to prepare everything.
Just then, Oliver appeared. He was in a dirty shirt from playing football, but still in a friendly mood. “Sorry I’m late,” he said, brushing himself off. Emma didn’t mind—she thought it was more important to be kind than to complain.
However, not everyone felt the same. Lucy arrived looking angry. “I wanted to bring cakes, but my little brother ate them all!” she said. Her angry face made the others fall quiet for a moment. But Tom, always nice and gentle, offered her some lemonade. “Don’t worry, Lucy,” he said. “We have more than enough food.” Slowly, she began to smile.
As the afternoon went on, they played games. Ben tried to lift the picnic basket again, showing how strong he was. Sophie laughed and said she was too weak to even move it an inch. Emma clapped for both of them, thinking it was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves.
At times, the group was very loud, shouting during a game of tag. At other times, they were quiet, lying back on the blanket, watching the clouds drift by. Everyone agreed that it was a beautiful way to spend the day.
When the sun began to set, the basket was no longer full, but everyone’s hearts were. They were tired, but in the happiest way. Emma looked at her kind, friendly, and lovely friends, and she knew she would always remember this new picnic.
Even Lucy, who had been angry, now said with a grin, “This was the nicest day I’ve had in a long time.”
And as they walked home together, Emma thought to herself: a picnic can be messy or dirty, noisy or quiet, but with the right people, it will always be beautiful.
