📖 The Jolly Sparkle of Yule

Snow fell softly across the village, covering every rooftop and fir tree with a glittering blanket. The air was crisp, and from the church square came the faint jingle of bells, carrying a tune that stirred hearts with memories of Yule. Children hurried past, clutching baubles and garlands to decorate the great tree that would stand as the centrepiece of the night’s feast.

Amid the cheerful bustle, young Thomas lingered by the wooden manger set up near the chapel. Within, the carved figures of the holy family glowed in the light of lanterns, while shepherd figures knelt with quiet reverence. An angel carved from pale wood hovered above them, her wings catching the sparkle of icicles that hung nearby. Thomas loved that angel, for she reminded him of his late mother, who had once told him that angels walked unseen among men during Yule.

Inside the village hall, the preparations for the feast were already under way. Long tables groaned under the weight of roasted meats, breads, pies, and sugared treats. Bowls of candy canes were scattered along the tables, each wrapped neatly in paper, waiting for eager hands to unwrap them. The smell of spice and pine filled the air, making the hall feel like a corner of the North Pole itself.

Outdoors, men secured the sled that would bring the Yule log from the forest. The heavy timber, wrapped in garland and decorated with baubles, would be placed upon the fire to burn throughout the night, its flames a symbol of light in the heart of winter’s darkness. Children skipped alongside, their laughter carrying like a jingle through the cold air, their joy as bright as the sparkle on the snow.

As dusk deepened, the villagers gathered. The feast began with song—hymns of the manger and carols that spoke of shepherds guided by starlight. The angel atop the great fir in the square glowed as though alive, her presence both sacred and comforting. Thomas sat with his father, breaking bread, sharing candy canes, and feeling for the first time in months a sense of peace.

Then, as the night stretched on, came the highlight: the lighting of the Yule log. The garland-wrapped timber was placed carefully upon the flames, and the crackle of fire mingled with the jingle of bells and the laughter of children. Sparks rose like stars, while icicles hanging from the eaves glittered with a brilliance that made the village seem enchanted.

In that moment, even the most weary felt jolly. The sparkle of the fire, the warmth of the feast, and the harmony of voices reminded them that Yule was not merely about the food or the gifts but about togetherness. The angel above the fir seemed to smile, her watchful presence a blessing on all gathered below.

And so, beneath the garlanded halls of the village, amidst sleds, baubles, and wrapping, the people celebrated. Yule had come again—bright, sacred, and filled with joy.
