🇬🇧🇨🇳 cholesterol - 胆固醇 : English Lesson

noun
Meaning of "cholesterol" ("胆固醇"), detailed definition, and a short video lesson below.
Cholesterol is a fatty, waxy substance that lives in our blood and in the cells of our body. Our body actually makes cholesterol because we need some of it to build cell walls and make certain important chemicals, like some hormones. But if we eat lots of greasy, fatty foods all the time, we can end up with too much cholesterol in our blood. When there is too much, it can slowly stick to the inside of blood vessels, like gunk in a pipe, and make it harder for blood to flow. This can cause heart problems when people get older. So cholesterol is not all bad—it’s something our body needs a little bit of—but it’s important to keep it at a healthy level with good food and exercise.
