The mountains were covered in white, and the air was freezing. Jack and Emily stepped out of their little wooden cabin, pulling their scarves tight. The cabin looked small against the huge hills, but inside it was always warm and cosy, with a fire burning in the hearth.
Outside, the snowfall was heavy. Each snowflake drifted gently from the overcast sky, sparkling as it landed. Jack held up his woollen mittens, catching one delicate snowflake before it melted. “It’s magical,” he whispered, even as he began to shiver in the icy wind.
They had planned a whole day of winter fun. First came the sledge. Emily climbed on, laughing as Jack gave it a push. The sledge raced down the hill, bouncing and swerving until it came to a stop near a pile of long, sharp icicles hanging from a rock. Another set of glittering icicles dangled above them, looking like frozen teeth ready to drop.
Next, they tried the snowboard. Jack strapped it on and began to slide down the slope. At first he wobbled, but soon he managed to slide smoothly over the slippery snow. The ground was so slippery that even walking back up made Emily laugh as she nearly fell.
The sky darkened. An icy storm was coming, the wind howling through the trees. The storm made the air colder, and they both began to shiver harder. They hurried back up, where a horse-drawn sleigh was waiting. The sleigh driver waved, his breath turning white in the frozen air. They climbed aboard, pulling their mittens tighter, and the horses trotted quickly down the path.
By the time they reached the cabin again, their noses were red, and their boots were heavy with snow. Emily brushed off her coat, leaving behind little piles of frozen flakes. She hung her wet mittens near the fire and smiled at Jack. “This is still the best day,” she said, curling up in the cosy armchair.
Jack nodded, handing her a blanket. Outside, the snowfall continued, covering the world in white. The overcast clouds rumbled with the last breath of the storm, but inside, everything was warm and safe.
The next morning, the sun peeked through, and more adventures waited—another ride on the sledge, another chance to catch a perfect snowflake, and perhaps a new path to slide down with the snowboard.
Winter was harsh, freezing, and sometimes dangerous, but for Jack and Emily, it was also full of laughter, wonder, and the quiet beauty of a world wrapped in snow.
