Brookfield School, something exciting was about to happen. The annual debate competition had arrived, and students were eager to win the trophy. Amelia, who loved words, had decided to pursue this challenge with all her energy. She knew she would need to spend hours preparing if she wanted to succeed.
Her teacher, Mr Lewis, reminded the class, “In debating, you must not only explain your point clearly but also justify why your opinion is stronger than the other side. You must also assess the arguments carefully, evaluate the evidence, and always reflect on how to improve.” He liked to emphasize that a debate was not just about speaking but also about thinking.
Amelia nodded. She began her preparation that evening. She tried to acquire as much information as possible by reading articles and listening to podcasts. At first, it was difficult to maintain focus, but she told herself to adapt her routine. Instead of watching television, she chose to spend her evenings reading and writing notes.
The next day, she practised in front of her family. Her little brother asked, “What if something unexpected happens during the debate?” Amelia smiled. “Then I’ll have to adapt and continue. I can’t just give up.” She tried to explain her arguments to them, and when her father challenged her, she had to justify her ideas even more strongly.
On the day of the debate, Amelia felt nervous but ready. She tried to assume a calm face, though inside her heart was racing. Her opponent began with strong points, and Amelia had to assess quickly what had been said. She chose to evaluate the weaknesses in the other side’s reasoning and used her chance to justify her own ideas.
Sometimes she stumbled, but she reminded herself to maintain confidence. “I can do this,” she thought. She adjusted her voice, emphasized the most important words, and managed to explain her arguments clearly.
When the debate ended, Amelia sat down and began to reflect on her performance. She asked herself: Did I manage to pursue my goal fully? Did I resolve the challenges well? She believed she had, though she also saw areas where she could adapt and improve next time.
Finally, the judges announced the result. Amelia’s team had won! She could hardly believe it. She would always remember this day, not just because of the victory but because of everything she had acquired along the way—confidence, discipline, and the courage to stand up and speak.
Her teacher congratulated her, saying, “Winning is wonderful, but the most important thing is that you learned how to assess, evaluate, and justify your ideas. That is something you can always maintain.”
Amelia smiled. She knew he was right. What had happened that day was not just a competition. It was the start of a lifelong journey to pursue knowledge, to adapt when needed, and to always reflect on how to grow.
