Henry loved his grandmother’s allotment, though many of his friends couldn’t understand why. They preferred football or video games, while he preferred the earthy smell of soil and the quiet chatter of the leaves. To Henry, each vegetable seemed alive, each one with its own story to tell.
One evening in late spring, his grandmother announced, “Tonight we’re making a feast from the garden. But first, we must harvest the forgotten patch.”
Henry followed her, carrying a basket. The first thing he spotted was the tall stalks of sweetcorn, their golden tassels catching the evening light. The kernels, bright and plump, promised a burst of flavour. He picked two ears, imagining them roasted.
Near the edge grew a lonely swede, half-hidden in the soil. It was gnarled and awkward, but his grandmother smiled. “The swede makes the sweetest mash once it’s cooked slowly.”
Underneath a damp log, Henry found a cluster of mushrooms. Their white caps looked ordinary, yet he knew they could transform a simple dish. He picked them carefully, already picturing them sizzling in butter.
Bright colours drew his eyes next: a row of sweet peppers, shining red, yellow, and green. Beside them, dark purple aubergines and striped courgettes lay heavy on the vines. “Perfect for a stew,” said his grandmother. Henry added them to the basket.
A large, round cauliflower stood proudly, its white head wrapped in green leaves. Not far away, tall celery stalks rose like soldiers, crisp and fresh. “Celery for crunch,” said Henry with a grin.
Hidden between the beds were tender spears of asparagus, so delicate they almost snapped at his touch. He placed them gently into the basket, next to a handful of ruby radishes, their peppery bite already making his mouth water.
By the compost heap, he found a fat beetroot, its purple skin staining his fingers, and a small squash, round and cheerful. “We’ll roast the squash with herbs,” his grandmother promised.
Closer to the fence, long green leeks grew tall, their roots buried deep. Henry tugged until one came free, laughing at the clump of soil that followed. Nearby, he saw leaves of kale, curly and strong, and pulled a bunch for soup.
Finally, they uncovered a crooked turnip and a prickly artichoke, its tough leaves guarding the tender heart inside. “The artichoke takes patience,” his grandmother said, “but it rewards you in the end.”
By the time the basket was full, Henry felt as though he had gathered not just vegetables, but characters for a great story—the bold sweetcorn, the shy swede, the proud cauliflower, and the stubborn turnip.
That night, the kitchen filled with steam, spice, and laughter. Dish after dish appeared: roasted aubergine, baked squash, sautéed mushrooms, and a salad of crisp radishes and juicy beetroot. The artichoke took the longest, but it was worth it.
As Henry tasted the feast, he realised something magical: in the Garden of Forgotten Vegetables, nothing was ordinary. Each one, whether celery or kale, had its own role, and together, they created a story on the plate.
