📖 The Day the Whiteboard Went Missing
Oakbridge Secondary prided itself on order—clear schedules, neat corridors, and a principal who could spot chaos from fifty metres away. But on Tuesday morning, something happened that nearly threw the whole school off its schedule.
It began when Mr Thompson, the most patient man ever to hold a marker, walked into his classroom and stopped in shock. His giant whiteboard—the one he used every day for learning, reading, writing, and every assignment on the schedule—was gone. Not erased. Not damaged. Gone.
Only a small piece of chalk lay where the whiteboard used to hang, which made absolutely no sense because Mr Thompson hadn’t used chalk in twenty years.
He sighed, picked up the mystery chalk, and headed to the principal. On the way, he passed students opening their lockers, comparing calendars, and stuffing folders and lunchboxes into bags. The normal chatter filled the hall, but Mr Thompson’s mind was on attendance and how he could take it without a whiteboard. And more importantly—who would steal an entire whiteboard?
The principal, Mrs Whitfield, examined the chalk, frowning.
“This is peculiar,” she said. “We must solve this before learning begins. I refuse to start a day with incomplete attendance.”
Her tone meant business.
Rumours spread quickly. Some whispered that the teacher’s pet in Year Eight had done it to help Mr Thompson look heroic. Others claimed a ghost from the old building liked collecting chalk dust. One dramatic child insisted it was an act of “creative rebellion” involving a sharpener and a philosophical statement about writing. That theory was politely ignored.
By midday, the mystery deepened. The janitor discovered faint marker lines on the floor—drag marks. Someone had slid the whiteboard instead of lifting it. And those marks led… straight to the locker of Ethan Harrow.
Ethan was clever, but he was also known for turning minor problems into major productions. When the principal opened his locker, the truth was revealed.
Inside, squeezed diagonally, was the entire whiteboard, decorated with ribbons and glitter.
“It was supposed to be a surprise!” Ethan cried. “Mr Thompson’s birthday is tomorrow! I was making him a new writing wall with positive messages from everyone! But then my marker ran out, and the sharpener didn’t help, and the chalk broke, and—well—things got out of hand.”
The principal rubbed her temples. “Ethan, this borders on educational catastrophe.”
Mr Thompson, however, smiled. “It’s all right. It was thoughtful… if a bit dramatic.”
The whiteboard was returned, the glitter mostly removed, and learning resumed. Attendance was taken late, but accurately.
And Ethan? He spent the afternoon gently restoring the whiteboard—while everyone agreed it had been the most exciting Tuesday the school had seen in years.
