📖 The Skull on the Compass
The stormy night had barely eased when Captain Edward Blackthorn stepped onto the deck of his ship, The Sea Serpent. The voyage had been long, and his sailors were weary, but the promise of treasure kept them sharp. With his telescope raised, Edward scanned the horizon, searching for the distant harbor where rumours spoke of buried jewels.
Beside him, the ship’s anchor clanged against the hull as the waves pushed hard. The rope holding it creaked, a sound that echoed through the storm. A young sailor clutched his compass, its needle shaking but still pointing true. “Captain, the harbor lies east!” he called, his voice breaking against the roar of the sea.
Edward’s hand tightened on the hilt of his sword. Treasure was never left unguarded, and he expected an attack. Pirates from rival crews had tried to capture The Sea Serpent before, and he knew they would try again if word of jewels reached them.
As dawn broke, the sailors spotted something half-buried in the sand of a nearby cove. With rope and hook, they pulled a chest from the shore. The skull carved on its lid sent a chill through the men. “A warning,” whispered one sailor, “to keep hands away.” But Captain Edward only smiled. “A skull means nothing if jewels lie within.”
They carried the chest onto the deck, where Edward’s sword carved the lock open. Inside, jewels glittered like stars, a treasure worth any voyage. But before the sailors could cheer, a second ship appeared. With sails stretched wide, it closed in fast, its crew ready to attack.
“Hooks and ropes!” shouted Edward. His sailors threw lines across as the enemy boarded. The stormy sea rocked both decks, and the sound of swords clashing filled the air. Edward fought fiercely, his compass tied to his belt, as if it were guiding him even in battle.
The enemy tried to capture the chest of jewels, but Edward’s sailors fought with every rope, anchor, and sword they had. At last, Edward raised his weapon and struck the enemy’s hook aside, forcing them back onto their ship. A final push sent their vessel drifting away, broken and beaten.
When the fight ended, the sailors gathered around the chest once more. The skull still stared at them, but now it seemed less a warning and more a symbol of their victory. With the jewels secure and the compass pointing them home, Edward gave the order.
“Raise the anchor. Set the sails. This voyage is far from over.”
And as the stormy sky cleared, The Sea Serpent cut across the waves, her deck filled with the sounds of sailors’ laughter, their eyes fixed on the harbour that promised rest, riches, and the start of another adventure.
