When Thomas inherited his grandfather’s cottage, he expected peace, quiet, and perhaps a few rabbits in the hedges. What he did not expect was the overwhelming chorus of life that began each evening when the sun set.
It started with a cricket, its chirping steady and oddly comforting. Then came the rustling of a woodlouse beneath the damp stones near the garden wall. He had never been fond of such creatures, but the sound made him oddly aware that he was not alone. Soon enough, a cockroach scuttled across the kitchen floor, reminding him that the house had not been properly cleaned for years.
In the compost heap, he found a wriggling larva, pale and waiting to become something more sinister. The soil was alive with creepy-crawly creatures of all sizes, moving in a secret world of their own. When he disturbed a rotting plank, a colony of termites scattered in panic, their tiny jaws having chewed more wood than he dared imagine.
One night, while reading by the fire, he felt an itch on his ankle and discovered a flea. The irritation soon spread when another flea joined it, making him slap his legs in annoyance. The shadows of the garden carried stranger shapes too—a lone earwig crawling from the cracks in the old windowsill, its pincers catching the candlelight.
The noises multiplied. A cicada began to buzz from the far hedge, its call eerie against the backdrop of silence. Once, Thomas looked up just in time to see a praying mantis perched on the windowsill, its forelegs poised as though in prayer, though he felt certain it was watching him with predatory calm.
Then came the danger: a hornet circled the attic, its droning wings announcing its authority. Outside, a bumblebee blundered happily between the lavender bushes, harmless in contrast but equally persistent. Along the pond’s edge, a delicate damselfly danced in the twilight, fragile yet impossible to ignore.
One evening, the garden was lit by a faint green glow. At first Thomas thought it was a trick of the eyes, but then he realised a firefly was blinking in the dark, signalling to its hidden kin. More appeared, their lights flickering like tiny lanterns guiding the way through shadows.
And yet, the most unsettling discovery was not the insects themselves, but the arachnid that ruled the corner of the porch. A spider, large and patient, spun its web wide enough to catch both moths and Thomas’s attention. The sight of its silent waiting unnerved him, but he knew it was only one of many arachnids that had claimed the house before him.
The cottage was alive, not with ghosts or memories, but with the endless crawling, buzzing, and clicking of creatures too small to ignore. At first, Thomas thought them pests. But over time, he came to realise that the cricket, the firefly, even the cockroach, all played their part in reminding him that the night had its own kind of beauty—creepy, persistent, and undeniably alive.
