On a misty autumn evening, the village children set out to the fields to gather food for the harvest feast. The air was sharp with the bite of early frost, and a silver mist floated low over the soil. Along the path stood a tall oak, its golden leaves trembling in the breeze, while a thick hedge marked the edge of the farmer’s land.
Tom carried a basket of bright berries, red as jewels, while Lucy balanced a heavy squash on her hip. Nearby, a deer leapt gracefully across the stubbly wheat field, vanishing into the trees with a rustle. “How picturesque this looks,” whispered Lucy, stopping to admire the fading glow of twilight as the sky turned pink and purple.
The children’s cheeks were red from the cold, but they felt cozy in their scarves and gloves. “Let’s gather quickly before the frost becomes too hard,” Tom urged, brushing mud from his boots. His basket bumped against the hedge, scattering a few berries onto the frosty soil.
Just then, a sleek red fox slipped out from behind the oak. Its eyes gleamed in the misty half-light of twilight, and it sniffed curiously at the fallen fruit. The children froze. The deer, hidden further away, raised its head too, ears twitching. For a moment, everything felt like part of a seasonal painting—the wheat fields, the oak, the fox, the deer, all touched with the glow of evening.
The fox picked up a berry in its teeth and trotted along the hedge, as if showing them the way. Laughing nervously, Lucy said, “He’s more polite than the squirrels. At least he leaves some food for us.” The children followed until they reached the barn, where lanterns shone warmly. Inside, the villagers sat around a long wooden table, their arms filled with pumpkins, squash, and bundles of golden wheat.
Everyone had worked hard to gather the harvest. Outside, the world was turning misty and cold, but the barn glowed cozy and bright. The smell of bread baking from freshly ground wheat filled the air. A garland of berries hung above the door, and branches of oak leaves decorated the walls.
As the meal began, old Mr. Carter raised his cup. “This is the joy of the seasonal feast,” he said. “We face the frost, we plant in the soil, and together we make something worth sharing.”
Through the open door, the children glimpsed the picturesque sight of the deer stepping softly near the barn, while the fox watched from the shadows of the hedge. The night was deepening, the last strands of mist curling under the oak branches, but inside, laughter and warmth carried on until long past twilight.
