📖 Turbulence Over the Atlantic
The vast glass walls of Terminal 4 gleamed under the morning sun as Olivia wheeled her suitcase towards the check-in counter. The place was alive with movement — tired travellers, echoing announcements, and the occasional hiss of a departing shuttle bus outside.
After showing her ticket and passport at passport control, she felt the familiar rush of travel begin. She moved through security, watching her bag scan slowly through the machine while an officer inspected it with little interest. Finally, she found a quiet corner of the departure lounge, where the smell of coffee and jet fuel mixed in the air.
A soft voice came through the speakers: “Flight BA219 to New York is now ready for boarding at boarding gate 27.”
Olivia gathered her things, checked her seat number, and followed the crowd to the boarding gate. A polite stewardess smiled as she handed over her boarding pass, her blue uniform crisp and perfect. Nearby, a steward was helping a nervous passenger find his seat assignment.
The aircraft waited outside, enormous and silver on the runway. Inside, the air was cool, and Olivia stowed her bag in the overhead compartment. She fastened her seatbelt and waited for takeoff.
Moments later, the engines roared, and the plane began to move. As it sped down the runway, Olivia felt her heart lift with it — the moment of takeoff always made her feel both fragile and free.
But freedom soon turned to unease. Two hours into the flight, the captain’s voice sounded calm but firm. “Ladies and gentlemen, please return to your seats. We are experiencing light turbulence.”
The cabin trembled slightly at first — then harder. The stewardess, still smiling bravely, walked down the aisle to check on passengers, gripping seats for balance. A cup of tea spilled, and a child began to cry. Olivia closed her eyes, focusing on her breathing.
After a few minutes, the turbulence eased. The steward announced with reassuring humour, “We’ve passed through the rough patch, folks. You may now move about the cabin.” Laughter spread, and the tension melted away.
Hours later, the captain announced their landing. The lights dimmed as the plane descended, city lights sparkling below like scattered stars. The wheels touched the ground smoothly, and a soft round of applause broke out.
At baggage claim, Olivia waited patiently for her case to appear. Around her, tired travellers exchanged small smiles — strangers connected by shared air and sky.
Outside the terminal, she stepped into the crisp evening air and watched another plane rise above the horizon. It felt like a quiet miracle — every takeoff a story beginning, every landing a story ending.
