📖 The Brave Boy and the Fire in the House

It was a quiet evening when a boy named Oliver sat in his room, reading a book on his bed. His parents were downstairs in the kitchen, cooking dinner, and everything felt calm inside the small house.

Suddenly, Oliver heard a strange crackling noise. At first, he thought it was just the wind outside the window, but then he smelled smoke. His heart began to race. He ran to the door and opened it—thick grey smoke filled the hallway. There was a fire somewhere in the house!

Oliver felt scared, but he knew he had to stay calm. He was a clever and smart boy, and he quickly made a plan. He ran to the top of the stairs and shouted, “Mum! Dad! There’s a fire!”

His mother shouted back from the kitchen, “Oliver! Get out of the house!”

The smoke grew thicker. Oliver wanted to scream, but instead, he stayed brave. He covered his mouth with his T-shirt and ran back into his room. The window was wide enough for him to climb out. He pushed it open and shouted again, “Mum! Dad! I’m going out the window!”

He climbed carefully and dropped onto the soft grass outside. He coughed a little, then looked up. He could see the orange flames dancing near the kitchen. He was worried about his parents, but before he could shout again, he saw them running out the door, coughing but safe.

His mum hugged him tightly. “You’re so brave, Oliver! You saved us.”

Oliver looked back at the burning house. The fire engine arrived, and firefighters ran inside with hoses and masks. They moved fast, putting out the fire before it spread upstairs.

When it was finally over, a firefighter came to speak to Oliver. “You were very clever, lad,” he said with a smile. “Not everyone your age would think so fast. That plan of yours—getting out through the window—was a smart move.”

Oliver felt proud, though still a bit scared from what had happened. The house was black with smoke, but it was still standing. His room and bed were safe, though the kitchen would need fixing.

That night, as they stayed at a neighbour’s house, Oliver’s dad said, “We’ll fix everything, son. What matters is that we’re all safe.”

Oliver nodded, holding his mum’s hand. He didn’t shout or scream now. He just smiled.

He knew that being brave didn’t mean you weren’t scared. It meant you acted even when you were. And that night, the boy who once feared the dark had become the clever, smart, and brave hero of his own house.
