It was a funny morning at the office when James, a young boss who took his job very seriously, noticed something odd on his calendar. A big red circle marked Saturday – Family Day! He frowned. “Who put this here?” he asked.
“It wasn’t me,” said Lisa, his assistant, trying not to laugh. “Maybe your relative reminded you to take a break?”
James sighed. Work had been full of stress lately. Meetings, phone calls, deadlines—he hadn’t had a real weekend in months. Still, the thought of Family Day made him nervous. His family could be loud and unpredictable.
On Saturday morning, James drove to his parents’ house. His little kid brother Ben ran out to greet him, jumping with excitement. “James! You came! Mum said you’d be too busy!”
James smiled despite himself. “Of course I came. What’s all this?”
Ben grinned. “It’s a surprise!”
Before James could ask more, their relative Aunt Susan arrived, carrying trays of food—sandwiches, fruit, and a big chocolate cake. Soon, everyone was there, chatting and laughing. Even the family cat, Daisy, climbed onto the table, trying to steal a piece of fish.
James tried to relax, but his boss mind kept thinking about emails and deadlines. “I can’t stop worrying,” he muttered.
“Stop thinking about work!” said Ben. “Come see the pool we built!”
He pulled James outside to the garden, where an inflatable pool sparkled in the sun. The kid splashed around, giggling. Daisy the cat sat on the edge, watching the water with wide eyes.
Then Ben shouted, “Let’s sing something!” and started a silly song about the family cat driving a car. Everyone laughed—it was so funny that even James joined in, singing loudly and off-key.
For a moment, all his stress disappeared. He realised how long it had been since he’d laughed like this.
Later, during lunch, James and Aunt Susan started to argue playfully about who made the best food—her sandwiches or Mum’s cake. “Yours are too salty!” James teased.
“And yours are too sweet!” she replied, smiling.
It wasn’t really an argument—just part of the warm, noisy day.
When the sun began to set, James looked around. His family was still talking and laughing. The cat slept on a chair, the pool reflected the pink sky, and Ben was singing quietly to himself.
James finally understood the message hidden in that mysterious calendar note. Maybe Lisa had added it, or maybe his mother—but it didn’t matter. He needed this day more than he’d realised.
As he packed up to drive home, Ben ran after him with a drawing. It showed James, the cat, and the pool. On top, it said, Best Family Day Ever.
James smiled. “You know, Ben,” he said, “this really was the best surprise.”
And for the first time in months, the tired boss felt calm, happy, and completely at home.
