It was a bright Saturday morning when Tom and his uncle George decided to decorate their home for Christmas. Every year, Uncle George brought boxes of lights and shiny bulbs, and every year something funny happened.
“Are you ready for our big lighting project?” Uncle George asked, holding a cup of hot drink.
Tom grinned. “Of course! Let’s make our house the brightest on the road this year!”
They started by unloading the boxes from the truck. The car was parked nearby, filled with other decorations and a small wrapped gift from Aunt Susan, who said they could only open it after they finished.
Tom carried a ladder to the side of the house, and Uncle George started climbing carefully. The wind was cold, and the roof looked slippery, but George was always confident—maybe a little too confident.
“Pass me the cable!” he called down. Tom handed it up, making sure the plug was clean and dry. They worked together, connecting each bulb along the roof. Inside, Aunt Susan tested the electricity by turning the switch on and off.
After an hour, the lights were almost done. Tom went inside to get another warm drink, when suddenly he heard a loud crash.
“Uncle George!” he shouted, running to the door.
His uncle was lying in the snow beside the ladder. “I’m fine,” he said, sitting up slowly. “It was just a little accident. The cable got tangled around my foot.”
Tom helped him back inside to warm up. Aunt Susan wasn’t happy, but George only laughed. “No Christmas without a little adventure,” he said.
After lunch, they went outside again—this time much more carefully. The ladder was steady, and Uncle George double-checked every plug and bulb. Tom watched through the window, hoping everything would go smoothly this time.
Finally, when the last cable was in place, George climbed down and said proudly, “Right, moment of truth!”
Tom ran to the switch inside the home and flipped it. For a second, nothing happened. Then, all at once, the lights came on—bright red, green, and gold, shining across the roof and down to the road.
Neighbours came out to see. Cars slowed down. Even a passing truck driver honked in approval.
“It’s beautiful!” Aunt Susan said, clapping her hands.
Uncle George smiled. “Told you it would work. Now, where’s that gift?”
Tom opened the box Aunt Susan had given them. Inside were two mugs that said Best Christmas Team. They laughed and filled them with hot drinks.
As evening fell, they sat together by the window, watching the glowing bulbs twinkle in the snow. The little accident was already forgotten.
“It was worth the trip,” Uncle George said softly. “A bright home, a warm night, and family—that’s the best gift of all.”
