It was a strange morning in the village school. Mr Harris, the science teacher, had promised the children something different: a “Body Parade.” He wanted them to see how every part of the body mattered, from the smallest toe to the powerful brain.
“Let’s begin with the face,” he said, smiling. “Our face shows who we are. With a single raise of the cheek or curl of the lip, people know if we are happy, angry, or shy.” The children touched their own cheeks and wiggled their lips, giggling.
Next came the thumb. Mr Harris held up his hand proudly. “Without the thumb, we could not hold a pencil or tie our shoes. It is small, but clever.” The children copied him, pressing their thumbs to their fingers, amazed at how useful it felt.
“Now, look at your skin,” he continued. “Your skin keeps you warm and safe. Without it, your blood and your bones would be in danger.” The thought made the children shiver. To make them laugh again, he tapped his elbow. “And don’t forget this funny part — the elbow bends so we can eat, hug, and play. Imagine trying to eat soup without an elbow!”
He marched across the classroom, pointing to his shoulder. “Here is the strongest helper. Your shoulders carry heavy bags, and when you are tired, a friend might rest their head there.” The children all touched their shoulders, feeling a little braver.
But the teacher grew serious. “Inside, we have things we cannot see. The heart is always working, pumping blood through the body. And the brain — ah, the brain is the leader. It tells your feet to walk, your tongue to speak, and even reminds you to brush every tooth in your mouth.”
At this, the children laughed again, poking at their teeth and sticking out their tongues.
“Of course,” Mr Harris added kindly, “we must take care of ourselves. Too much fat can make the heart tired, and broken bones take a long time to heal. But with good food, smiles, and play, your body will thank you.”
To end the lesson, he lined the pupils up for the “Body Parade.” Each child called out a part: “Toe!” “Cheek!” “Thumb!” “Brain!” Soon the room filled with a joyful rhythm of words, a celebration of every hidden bone and every soft lip.
As the bell rang, Emma whispered to her friend Oliver, “I think my heart feels bigger after that story.” Oliver tapped his elbow and grinned. “And my brain is telling me I’m hungry. Let’s go!”
Together, they ran outside, their bodies alive with laughter, knowing that every tooth, every shoulder, and every beat of blood was part of the great parade inside them.
