📖 The Project of Many Minds
At the university of Durham, Professor Ellis gathered her students for an unusual challenge. “This term,” she said, “you will collaborate on a project that no single person could achieve alone. You will need to analyse data, investigate causes, and demonstrate your results. But most importantly, you must learn how to negotiate and contribute as a team.”
The students looked at one another nervously. Some were excited to participate, while others feared they would fail.
Anna was the first to speak. “I’d like to propose that we study energy use on campus. If we can generate useful solutions, perhaps the university will even implement them.”
“That’s ambitious,” said James, who often liked to speculate about problems before acting. “But how would we optimize our resources? We can’t measure everything.”
“That only implies we must prioritize carefully,” replied Sofia, always the pragmatist. “We can investigate lighting first, then heating, before moving to food waste. Each of us could contribute to a different part.”
The group began to sketch out their plan. They would analyse electricity bills, investigate student habits, and demonstrate changes that might mitigate energy waste. At times they had to negotiate fiercely: who would take the late-night surveys, who would present their findings, and who would write the final report.
Not all moments were smooth. Thomas tended to speculate endlessly about future technologies, which others did not always perceive as helpful. Emily insisted they must optimize their timetable, while Ravi wanted to prioritize data collection above all else. More than once, Professor Ellis stepped in to remind them that to collaborate meant listening, not just speaking.
Gradually, they found balance. Anna and Sofia worked to implement their survey questions. James and Thomas began to analyse the bills with surprising focus. Emily and Ravi prepared charts that could demonstrate their progress clearly.
After weeks of hard work, the group stood in front of the university board. “We would like to propose three changes,” Anna began. “First, motion-sensor lights in the library. Second, better insulation in the older dormitories. Third, an awareness campaign to encourage students to turn off devices.”
Sofia added, “We believe these steps will not only mitigate waste but also generate savings for the university.”
The board listened carefully. One member asked, “Do you perceive that students will actually follow the campaign?”
James smiled. “We can’t guarantee it, but our data implies they will if the message is lively and direct. We’re ready to participate in the campaign ourselves to prove it.”
By the end, Professor Ellis beamed. “You have shown how to collaborate, how to negotiate, and how to implement ideas wisely. You didn’t just talk—you worked together to demonstrate solutions. That,” she concluded, “is the true lesson.”
And for the first time, every student truly felt they had contributed to something bigger than themselves.
