In the quiet town of Ashcombe, a curious rumour spread each spring. It was said that, on the first night of the season, the vegetables from Mrs Cartwright’s famous allotment came alive to hold a feast of their own. Most villagers dismissed it as nonsense, but young Oliver, who often helped with the gardening, believed otherwise.
That evening, when the moon rose, Oliver crept into the allotment. To his astonishment, he saw a gathering unlike any other. A proud eggplant polished its purple skin while a row of zucchini swayed in rhythm like dancers. The Brussels sprouts rolled into a circle, chattering merrily, while the elegant fennel waved its feathery fronds like a conductor leading an orchestra.
At the head of the table sat Kohlrabi, plump and round, with a voice as booming as a market vendor. Beside him, the sharp-tongued gherkin muttered complaints, while the peppery watercress tried to keep the peace. “Let us begin,” Kohlrabi announced. “Tonight, we celebrate the richness of the soil and the bounty of the garden!”
The first dish was brought forth: a stew of lentils, the humble legume that had nourished generations. Oliver watched in awe as even the stately romaine lettuce leaned forward to taste. “A fine beginning,” she said approvingly. Then came roasted yams, their golden flesh steaming in the cool night air, followed by sweetened rhubarb compote, which made even the prickly horseradish smile.
The gathering grew louder. The parsnips sang folk songs, their voices earthy and warm, while romanesco dazzled everyone with its spirals of fractal green, glowing faintly in the moonlight. The arugula, bold and peppery, leapt upon the table, delivering speeches about freedom, growth, and the dignity of the garden. “We may be scattered on plates and sold in markets,” she cried, “but together we form a legacy of nourishment!”
The eggplant and zucchini cheered, the Brussels sprouts clapped in their rolling way, and the fennel added a flourish with her fronds. Even the shy watercress, usually timid, stood proudly at last. Oliver, hiding behind a row of bean poles, could scarcely breathe for excitement.
Yet as the feast drew to a close, a hush fell. The horseradish, known for its biting wit, spoke solemnly. “Our time is short. By dawn, we return to silence. But remember: our purpose is to bring joy and strength. That is the true gift of every legume, every leaf, every root.”
When the first rays of dawn touched the romaine and the last of the rhubarb faded back into stillness, Oliver ran home, his heart pounding. He had witnessed a secret older than stories, a revelry of roots and leaves.
From that day on, he never looked at a parsnip or a yam the same way again. To him, every zucchini, every lentil, every sprig of watercress held a whisper of the magic of that night—the secret feast of the garden.
