It began with anticipation rather than alarm. The Henderson family had spent weeks planning their winter getaway—a road trip across the Highlands in their newly rented RV. It was meant to be a season of laughter, hospitality, and the kind of feast one only dreams of at Christmas.
But as anyone who’s travelled with family knows, even the best plans can descend into a catastrophe.
The first mishap struck not far from Inverness. A sudden gust of wind tore the awning clean off the RV, sending it flapping into the snow like a wounded bird. “No worries!” said Geoff, the eternal optimist, brandishing a staple gun he’d packed “just in case.” Unfortunately, the resilience of plastic against metal proved overestimated—within minutes, the awning looked more like modern art than shelter.
Still, spirits remained high. They drove on, singing carols and dreaming of the luminous northern lights they hoped to see that night. But nature had other plans.
At dusk, a violent snowstorm swept through the valley. Visibility dropped to nothing, and within moments, the RV’s headlights dimmed before flickering out entirely. A blackout. The heater stopped. The family huddled together in their coats, their laughter growing thinner with every breath of icy air.
The next morning, determined to make the best of it, Geoff decided to clear the snow using a borrowed chainsaw—because, as he proudly declared, “A shovel is for amateurs.” The result was predictably disastrous: the chainsaw sputtered, jammed, and sent a spray of snow into the open cabin door. Calamity number three.
By now, even the most resilient of the group—his wife, Eleanor—was losing patience. “Geoff,” she sighed, “I love you dearly, but your idea of hospitality feels more like catastrophe with a welcome mat.”
Just as the mood began to thaw, they noticed a small inn nearby, its windows luminous with candlelight. Inside, the innkeeper greeted them with genuine hospitality, offering soup, warmth, and stories of travellers far less fortunate. For the first time in days, the Hendersons relaxed. The inn even offered a Christmas bonus: a hearty feast of roast lamb, potatoes, and homemade pudding.
When the storm finally cleared, the family ventured outside with a borrowed sled, gliding clumsily down a nearby hill. There were falls, laughter, and—inevitably—another mishap when Geoff collided with a snowbank. Yet, by then, no one minded.
What could have been a catastrophe became a lesson in resilience. What began as disastrous escalation ended in light, laughter, and renewed gratitude.
As the RV rolled home days later, patched up and still leaning slightly to the left, Eleanor smiled. “You know, Geoff,” she said, “next year, let’s just stay home.”
Geoff grinned. “Sure,” he replied. “But I’m keeping the staple gun—just in case.”
